Containerised Storage vs Self Storage: What's the Difference?

When your move doesn't quite line up – whether it’s a delayed settlement, home renovation or new build, you may need somewhere safe to store your belongings. But not all storage is the same, and understanding the difference between containerised storage and self-storage can help you choose the right option for your move.

What is Containerised Storage?

Containerised storage means your items are packed into a purpose-built module or container, usually as part of your move, which is then transported and stored as a sealed unit. Everything you own goes in once, in one place, and stays there until you need it again.

At Acrobat Removals, we offer two forms of containerised storage, so you can pick whichever suits the size of your move. Our Modules are durable, premium, and ventilated to handle all weather conditions, and are kept in our secure indoor warehouse in Sandgate. For larger jobs, we also offer full-size shipping containers, stored in our secure outdoor facility – ideal for whole-house moves or storage for big, bulky items.

Because your belongings stay in the same module or container from collection through to delivery, there is no unnecessary double handling, reducing the risk of damage.

What is Self Storage?

Self storage works differently. You hire a unit – usually at a facility with rows of individual rooms or lockers – and you're responsible for getting your belongings there yourself. That means loading a truck or trailer, driving to the facility, and unloading everything into the unit, either roping in some friends to help, sourcing vehicles or organising another provider to help with these services.

While this can suit people storing only a few items, it often becomes far more time-consuming when moving the contents of an entire home.

It's a familiar option, but it does mean more legwork for you – organising your own vehicle hire, sourcing packing materials, and coordinating professional help with packing or unpacking if you need it, which is all time taken away from everything else on your moving list.

The Difference in Handling

Handling is the biggest practical difference between the two options. With containerised storage, our AFRA-accredited removalists pack your belongings into the module once, and that's it – no repacking, no reloading. Self storage works the other way: you load items into a vehicle, unload them into the unit, then reverse the whole process when it's time to move them again. Every time an item is lifted, loaded or unloaded, there is another opportunity for scratches, dents, or accidental damage.

How are your Belongings Looked After?

Our storage modules are built for the job, and every item that goes into one is wrapped in an unlimited supply of premium furniture blankets and packed carefully by our team. This professional packing process helps minimise movement during transport and provides an extra layer of protection while your belongings are in storage. We also have a range of premium boxes and furniture covers available, and any undamaged boxes bought through Acrobat can be returned to our Sandgate depot for a refund once your move is done. If you'd rather not pack everything yourself, our pre-packing service takes care of it for you, using the same industry-standard cartons and materials.

Self storage puts that consistency in your hands instead. However well (or not) you packed and stacked things into your unit is generally how they'll be when you come back, and every time you need access, you're the one restacking and manoeuvring everything through narrow doorways, lifts, or roller doors by yourself – that's when a dining table gets scraped against a doorframe or a mattress ends up bent to fit through a gap it wasn't really built for. With containerised storage, that risk disappears the moment your module or container is sealed, because nothing gets touched again until you're ready to unpack it.

The Hidden Risks of Self Storage

Self-storage facilities have made headlines in recent years for major fires, several of them linked to flammable items or lithium batteries stored inside units. It's a real risk, and it's one you have very little control over in a self-storage facility – you don't know what's stored in the unit next to yours, or how carefully it's been packed.

At Acrobat Removals, we take a strict approach to storage safety. Flammables, gas bottles, and lithium batteries are not permitted in our storage modules or containers. Because every item is handled and stored by our professional team, you can be confident there’s no dangerous goods stored alongside your belongings.

Fitting Around a House Move

If you're already using Acrobat Removals for your move, containerised storage is the option that fits naturally into it. There's no separate trip to a storage facility, no extra day set aside for loading a unit, and no need to coordinate access hours around your own schedule. Moving rarely follows a perfect timeline. Whether you are waiting on settlement, renovating or building, our team can pack, move and securely store your belongings until you’re ready for delivery. It's one of the main reasons people choose a removalist that handles it all: packing, moving, and storage together.

Why Removalist Storage Differs from Self-Storage

Self-storage puts the logistics in your hands. You choose the unit, you do the driving, and you do the lifting (or you hire extra help; a whole other layer of logistics), which can work for some situations, but it adds cost, time, and risk that most people underestimate until they're in the middle of it.

Removalist storage removes much of the complexity from the moving process. Your module is packed by the same AFRA-accredited team already handling your move, transported to a secure site, and stored until you're ready for it to come back. Need to grab something in the meantime? A quick call has your module brought down for access. It's a level of care and simplicity that a self-storage unit simply cannot match.

If you’re looking for a storage solution that reduces handling, protects your belongings and simplifies your move, containerised storage offers significant advantages over traditional self-storage.

FAQs

What's the difference between containerised storage and self-storage?

Containerised storage packs your belongings into a module once, which is then transported and stored securely until you need it again. Self-storage requires you to load and unload your own vehicle to move items in and out of a hired unit, which means more handling and more legwork on your end.

Is Acrobat Removals' containerised storage safe?

Yes. Your belongings are wrapped in professional furniture blankets and packed by our trained team into modules that are kept locked and alarmed at our Sandgate premises.

The modules themselves are built to handle all weather and conditions, with ventilation designed to protect your belongings from mould, damp, and dust while they're in storage.

Is containerised storage more expensive than self-storage?

It often works out to be excellent value once you factor in the time, fuel, and effort self-storage requires you to put in yourself. Most self-storage facilities lock you into a flat monthly charge regardless of whether your plans change halfway through. Acrobat Removals only charges for the time you're actually using the storage, so if your new place comes through earlier than expected, you're not stuck paying for weeks you don't need.

Can I access my belongings while they're in containerised storage?

Yes. Simply give us a call, and we'll bring your module down ready for you, with a small handling fee for the service.
