We are here to help organise your belongings and provide some tips on how to declutter your home before moving day
Moving house can be difficult when you have a variety of items you don’t really need anymore.
Generally, household clutter can seem harmless. But when it comes to moving house, you don’t want to be wasting time packing and organising these items, just for it to lie around in your new home again.
There are many useful ways to get rid of old belongings before you move home. Plus, there are a variety of benefits in doing so as well.
The benefits of decluttering
The definition of clutter is the collection of items that you no longer need or are attached to that you haven’t got rid of yet.
It can be a menace to have clutter when moving house. Decluttering ahead of time can ensure there’s minimal stress before you move.
In addition…
- Clutter can slow down your moving process and make it more costly. Basically, the less stuff you have to move, the more cost-effective and faster it will be. This reigns true regardless of whether that is the number of trips made by yourself or a removalist team.
- You will be able to find the things you need easier when unpacking. Having unwanted or unnecessary items can slow down the unpacking process. This can cause frustration when looking for something specific.
- If you are planning to put some or all your belongings into storage, decluttering can significantly reduce the amount of space required.
- If you are selling, removing clutter can help buyers envision themselves in your home. Decluttering also makes the space feel more spacious and inviting.
- Removing clutter from your home can actually improve your mental health. Clutter can be a stress trigger for many people and pose as a distraction.
- Decluttering can also improve your general wellbeing as clutter often houses dust and mould.
How to declutter your home
When you’re ready to start decluttering your home, you will want a plan of attack to help you through it.
Here are some great tips from our team of professional removalists that can help you kick start your decluttering:
1. Set aside time
Make a plan of attack for where you want to start and what you want to declutter in the time you have allocated. Start small, make a list of areas you want to declutter and schedule in breaks.
2. Decide where you want to start
You don’t want to be jumping between rooms and cupboards leaving a mess behind you. Focus on one section of your home at a time.
3. Make piles
You will want three piles to start your decluttering; Recycle/Bin, Donate/Sell, and Keep. Once you have decided to get rid of an item, don’t look back!
4. ‘How long has it been since you used it?’
Use this question to decide whether you really need to keep an item. While something might be in good order, it doesn’t mean you need to keep it. Donating the item will help you to declutter and allow someone who needs the item to use it.
5. Get rid of expired items
This one is pointed at your pantry and kitchen. If it is expired, it has to go! And don’t forget those food items that you probably won’t be using before they are expired either.
6. Storage
Sometimes there are belongings that you might want to keep, but you don’t have the space to store it in your home. Whilst we recommend getting rid of things that aren’t sentimental, storage is an option for those non-negotiable items.
7. Everything needs a home
Every one of your belongings needs a home, if it doesn’t fit and is something you need, then something else has to go. Leaving items around the house that don’t have a home makes it look more cluttered.
8. Ask for help
If you are struggling to let go of your belongings, it can be great to have a friend or family member help. Someone who doesn’t have an attachment to items can really help you sort through everything.
9. Play some music
When decluttering, it can be great to put on some music to set yourself up with some good vibes. Check out our team’s moving day playlist, which is perfect for decluttering too!
